Having lived in Madison for roughly a decade, I’ve had the pleasure of calling many neighborhoods on the isthmus my home. I’ve lived on campus, State Street, University Avenue, and in Tenney-Lapham.

But the place I truly feel at home in Madison — and the place in which I’ve lived the longest — is the Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara neighborhood. Or, in fewer syllables, the SASY neighborhood. Here’s my perfect SASY day.

First, Coffee

My day always starts with coffee and luckily for me, the SASY neighborhood is full of cafes willing to satisfy my caffeine fix. My coffee shops of choice are Forward Craft and Coffee (they also sell beer), The Victory, or Reverie Baking Co.

Take a Walk

Taking a stroll down Atwood Avenue, countless shops and businesses line the street offering something for just about everyone.

You can’t take a trip to SASY without stopping by A Room of One's Own. This trans- and queer-owned bookstore recently moved to the neighborhood from its longtime home on State Street and has quickly become a SASY staple.

Feeling spicy? Walk a little further down the street and you’ll find Forward Tattoo, another new addition bringing life and creativity to the neighborhood. Hot tip: this shop offers cheap flash pieces that rotate on a monthly basis.

Just a few blocks further east, you’ll find yourself between Olbrich Park and Olbrich Botanical Gardens, which offer free lakefront access and a chance to surround yourself with plants.

For the golfers out there, head to Blind Shot Social Club on Fair Oaks Avenue. They have golf simulators, plus a full food and drink menu with amazing non-alcoholic options.

Let’s Eat

What are you in the mood for? Something comforting? Check out Stalzy’s Deli. Bar food? Player's Sports Bar is my choice, but Harmony Bar is also a solid option (go for the walnut burger).

If you’re feeling fancy or planning a date night, check out Mint Mark, Alchemy, or Bar Corallini.

If you’re planning dinner at home, make it something special by stopping at Table Wine for a curated selection of wine, spirits, and beer.

For dessert, head over to Atwood Scoop or the Chocolate Shoppe, both on Atwood Avenue.
