Nestled between Madison’s East and North sides is Eken Park, a small but mighty neighborhood that has gained some exciting additions in recent years.
To get the inside scoop on Eken Park, we caught up with Charles McNulty, a longtime neighborhood resident, current Eken Park festival co-chair, and a self-proclaimed frequent dog walker and playground-parent.
The below interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Madison Minutes: What sets Eken Park apart from the rest of Madison?
Charles McNulty: Our history of being mostly homes built by and owned by Oscar Mayer workers is one thing that makes our neighborhood unique. We take pride in the nickname “Wiener-ville,” even if we don't miss the odors wafting from the Oscar Mayer plant!
MM: It seems like the neighborhood has seen a lot of growth in recent years in terms of new businesses and people — where are the standout spots to grab a bite or get a drink?
CM: We have everything in our neighborhood from great breakfasts at Ogden's North Street Diner to the amazing fish fry at the Tip Top Tavern and top-notch sandwiches at Crostini Sandwiches. Of course for every craving in between we have pastries, coffee, and beer at the Northstreet collective, and finally, you can't miss the bubble tea at the Bubbling Teapot.
MM: Does Eken Park have any overlooked or hidden gems?
CM: We have a great dog park tucked away right alongside the Starkweather Creek, and just up the bike path, the best little loop for learning to ride a bike at Washington Manor Park.
MM: Please help settle the debate: Is it “EE-ken Park” or “EH-Ken Park”?
CM: I can certainly attest that the majority of residents call it "EE-ken" park, but the proper Norwegian pronunciation would definitely be "EH-Ken", so I'm afraid I'm not able to settle that debate!
MM: Anything else you'd like to add about the neighborhood?
CM: Almost any summer weekday evening, get a freshly grilled burger and watch some enthusiastic kids play baseball at the Little League fields, then wander down North Street to grab a unique brew and relax on the patio of the Northstreet. Finally take in a performance at the North Street Cabaret to finish out the evening. Madison life doesn't get any better than that!
