What Madison's Talking About

🏫 Rothman Fired as UW President: The UW Board of Regents unanimously voted to fire System President Jay Rothman on Tuesday night. Rothman was told last week by the board that he should resign or retire, but Rothman refused, saying he did not know why the board had lost confidence in his performance. [Cap Times, Universities of Wisconsin]

[B]ased on the annual performance review and subsequent discussions, the Board has lost confidence in President Rothman’s ability to lead the UWs moving forward.

⛳ Blind Shot Social Club Closing: The owners of Blind Shot Social Club said that the east side spot, known for combining food and drinks with golf simulators, will close Sunday after nearly five years. Owner Brent Mann said the closing was precipitated by massive flood damage the restaurant sustained last fall after a tenant in an apartment above the restaurant fired a gun into a wall and hit a water main. 🏗️ Men’s Homeless Shelter Opening Delayed: City officials say that the men’s homeless shelter on Bartillon Drive will not open this month as planned. Community Development Manager Linette Rhodes said there is still work to be done on the building, which will contain 250 beds for unhoused men to stay overnight. [News 3]

🇮🇶 Kidnapped Journalist from Mount Horeb Released: Shelly Kittleson, an American journalist who was kidnapped last week off the streets of Baghdad, has been released according to an Iraqi official. Kittleson grew up in Mount Horeb and has been reporting on Iraq and Syria for 20 years. [WPR]

🎮 Game Over for Raven Software CEO: Brian Raffel, who co-founded video game developer Raven Software in Madison in 1990 with his brother Steve, announced on LinkedIn that he is retiring. Raven became well-known among video game fans for its best-selling titles, including Heretic, Jedi Academy, and several entries in the popular Call of Duty franchise. [LinkedIn, PC Gamer]

⬆️ Last Week’s Photo

This is the Wisconsin State Capitol! (In honor of April Fool’s Day last week, I thought it would be funny to pick Madison’s most iconic building for Where Is It?)

🎉 Congratulations to Kati L., Natana G., and Maddie M. for putting up with my tomfoolery and being the first three people to guess correctly! (Also, bonus points to Danny G. for guessing The Caribou Tavern.)

I want to go listen to every one of these albums. Do you know where they are? (Photo by Vermilion O.)

Do you know where these album covers are located?

  • It’s in a spot that’s near campus
  • It’s a spot known for both great coffee and tasty waffles.
  • The name refers to the location’s spirit, not that they’re from Indiana!

Solar, without panels.

If you're planning a new roof in Madison this year, there's a different way to go solar. Solar shingles generate clean energy while blending directly into the roof itself, upgrading curb appeal and preserving roof integrity. See what our solar roofs look like on real Madison homes at https://www.sunvaultroofing.com/why-solar.

📰 Extra! Extra! The Memorial Union Terrace opens next week, but why fight the crowds for a sunburst chair when you can have a lakeside terrace all your own? Check out this $10.5 million mansion on the shore of Lake Mendota with six bedrooms, a wine cellar, and a large stone terrace. The only bummer is that the terrace chairs are a boring black, not orange, green, and yellow 💰
