Your Daily Guide

Good morning, Madison! What’s your neighborhood bar? You know, the one that really brings the community together. Could be a dive bar, a sports bar, or a fancy cocktail bar, but it’s the place that you run into your neighbors on a cold winter’s night or a hot summer afternoon, the place that ties the community together.

We’re going to do a special episode later this month on Madison’s iconic neighborhood bars, and we want to hear from you. Leave us a voicemail at 608-318-3367 or email madison@citycast.fm and let us know where everybody knows your name. We might feature it on the podcast in the newsletter 🍻

What Madison's Talking About

🖼️ The Chazen is Closing Until Fall. JUST Until Fall.

  • Some Madison art lovers were unpleasantly fooled by an April 1 social media prank that claimed the museum would be closing after 56 years. Turns out, it is closing...but only for a few months while they finish renovations to the adjoining Elvehjem building and reinstall its permanent collection.
  • The museum’s galleries will close to the public April 6 and will reopen sometime this fall, museum officials said. The museum’s lobby and cafe will stay open throughout the renovations.
  • 😆 No fooling! On the City Cast Madison podcast today, we talk about the Madison-based pranks that were played on us this April Fool’s Day, the ones that delighted us and the ones that traumatized us. We also get into the city’s new pedestrian plan, the race for Dane County Circuit Court, and big changes coming to Wisconsin Hoofers’ building. [Facebook, 🎧 City Cast Madison]

🏗️ City Officials Want To Speed Up Zoning Approval Process

  • Homeowners could get approval for renovation projects much more quickly under a city proposal to speed up the process in some instances, leaving city staff more time to focus on larger projects.
  • Currently, 4,000 single and two-family homes are located in areas across the city zoned for “planned development,” which were a popular way in the ‘70s and ‘80s to allow developers more flexibility. But such developments have fallen out of favor, and residents living in them are effectively “frozen in time,” and facing more onerous restrictions, city officials said.
  • Under the proposal, those properties would be rezoned to put them in line with neighboring areas, making it easier for their owners to add a deck or a new patio door. [Cap Times]

🤷 UW President Doesn’t Know Why Regents Want Him To Go. But He Won’t.

  • Universities of Wisconsin System President Jay Rothman said the Board of Regents have told him to resign or retire. But, in a letter obtained by the Associated Press, Rothman said he hasn’t been given a reason, and he isn’t budging.
  • The board held an emergency closed-door meeting Wednesday night to discuss personnel matters. Rothman said he has been told that if he doesn’t leave, the board will start the process of terminating him. [WPR]

Since to date you have not provided any substantive reason or reasons for the Board’s finding of no confidence in my leadership, I am not prepared, as a matter of principle, to submit my resignation.

Banking Outside the Box with Oak Bank

Q: What are the advantages of working with a local bank?

A: You benefit from local decision-making by people who live and work in your community and are more invested in your success as a result. Also, you’ll be working with real people. When you call Oak Bank, someone picks up the phone. No bots. No nonsense. Just real people answering real questions about your business’s financial needs.

Friday Floof

Wrigley (Bean) is the most handsome gentleman, but be careful, if you say his name three times in a row you'll summon his alter ego, Beetle-Bean! He’s the kookiest and most furrocious guy this side of the Mississippi!

Although he just celebrated his ninth birthday, he's still a crazy puppy. His favorite activities include, playing fetch until the end of time, yelling at people through the window, getting belly rubs, and disemboweling plush toys.

Solar, without panels.

If you're planning a new roof in Madison this year, there's a different way to go solar. Solar shingles generate clean energy while blending directly into the roof itself, upgrading curb appeal and preserving roof integrity. See what our solar roofs look like on real Madison homes at https://www.sunvaultroofing.com/why-solar.

📰 Extra! Extra! Have you ever been jogging down State Street and thought “This would make a great country song?” Me neither, but somebody did. A song just dropped on Spotify by an artist named Crosby Hale called “State Street Run.” (“Capitol dome is a far-off shine/ Feel like it’s watching me cross that line.”) I don’t know who Crosby Hale is or if he’s even real or AI, but it’s kind of a twangy banger 🤠
