Tax Day is April 15, which means you still have 43 days left to file your personal income tax return. (Tick tock.)
Taxpayers are encouraged to file their taxes online through the Internal Revenue Service’s Free File site and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue’s WisTax site.
Starting to feel stressed? The good news is that many Wisconsinites can find free help with filing their tax returns.
Who Is Eligible?
Generally, Wisconsin taxpayers whose annual income is $67,000 or less can get free tax preparation help at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counselling for the Elderly (TCE) sites accross the state.
These programs are designed to help seniors, low-income taxpayers, those with disabilities, and non-English speakers file their taxes, but anyone who is eligible can take advantage of the free service.
Appointments usually take about an hour. There are some special situations that the free sites can’t help with, such as a married couple filing separately.
Where Are They?
The sites are located at schools, libraries, and nonprofits throughout the state, and are staffed by volunteers who are trained to meet IRS standards. At many locations, services are provided in both Spanish and English.
Search with your zip code to find the location closest to you. In Madison, participating locations include several Goodwill Industries stores around town, Madison Public Library’s Central location, and the Richard Dilley Tax Center.
Many of the locations require appointments made in advance, and operate through April 15.
What Should I Bring?
Check this list from the IRS of what documents are required. They include all tax and income documents, an accepted form of photo ID, and Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and your dependents. You can also bring your bank information if you would like to receive your refund via direct deposit.
